Long Island is a body of land surrounded by water. It should come as no surprise that the nearness to the ocean, the sound, the bays and estuaries are both a blessing and a curse to the island inhabitants. It was the ocean that brought the first European explorers and colonists to our shore. It was that same ocean that will bring pirates, privateers, midnight raiders, and the rumrunners of the Prohibition era. It is all part of the rich tapestry of this Island’s story that spans almost five hundred years.
