Most of us don't think twice when we add sugar to our favorite beverage. The history of sugar is fascinating, complex, and fraught with human drama! Sugar played a critical role in the development of the Americas during the 17th and 18th centuries when West Indian sugar planters could be found right here on Long Island. In her lecture, SUNY Stony Brook Professor Dr. Jennifer L. Anderson will focus on the rising demand for sweets which inspired Europeans and colonists to cultivate sugarcane in the Caribbean.
