The Tragic Wrecks of the U.S. Ships Bristol and Mexico on the South Shore of Long Island, in 1837

In 1837, two landmark events in Long Island and Irish-American history occurred when 215 people perished off Long Beach and Rockaway Beach, within shouting distance of shore.  Most of the victims were Irish immigrants who had been squeezed below decks on cargo ships.  Most of them froze to death on the deck of their ship after their captain and crew abandoned ship.

These are perhaps the most important shipwrecks in U.S. maritime history.  The tragedy is certainly the most dramatic.  Mr. Mattson has been a frequent lecturer, writer, and TV host on topics as diverse as Long Island History, Motorcycling in Europe, and the poet Dante.

Space is limited.  Reservations requested.  Fee: $10; $8 seniors; Members free.  The program will be followed by book sales and signings.  Checks payable to: Friends of Rock Hall.
