Early American Jews: Myth, Reality and Legacy
Sunday, February 8th -1:30 p.m.
Speaker-Professor Michael Hoberman
Who were the first Jews to come to North America? Where did they originate? Why did they choose to settle where they did, and what were their motivations for crossing the Atlantic in the first place? In this talk, Michael Hoberman will explore these questions but, also, more broadly, the reasons why early Jewish American history matters in the first place. As we approach the semi-quincentennial of the US, what are we celebrating, exactly, and what can we learn by marking the occasion? Michael Hoberman is a full-time professor of American literature at Fitchburg State University in Massachusetts and an adjunct professor of history at Yeshiva University.
