Before GPS or the directional app, how did navigators and explorers, sail safely across ocean waters? Early marine navigation was accomplished through use of the trusted cross-staff, back-staff, sexton and octant. Speaker Douglas Sheer, recalls the long ago methods of marine navigation and how to use the stars to find a desired destination.
Mr. Sheer is a licensed captain and historian of naval navigation. He won a National Endowment for the Humanities Award to study celestial navigation in Greenwich, England. Mr. Sheer is a "Friends of Rock Hall" board member and the president of the Long Beach Island Landmarks Association. Space is limited and reservations are required.
